Medicaid is a needs-based health program. The program will pay for long term care, but the eligibility requirements are strict. All individuals must meet meet income and asset tests. All individuals must be over 65, disabled or blind. Eligibility requires mandatory contribution of all the recipient's income.
Even though the Medicaid program has seemingly strict financial requirements, there are ways in which a family can structure its assets to qualify for Medicaid while preserving a substantial part of the assets for the family members and/or the person in the nursing home.
